🌼Pollinator Project Update 🚨 Final month for garden rebates We’re offering up to $500 in rebates for new pollinator gardens that meet our size and native plant criteria. We’ve already distributed over $5,000 in rebates to Beverly residents who have transformed their yards. Submit your application by October 31st–don’t miss out! Did you know? Fall is optimal for planting! 🍁 Fall planting offers benefits for both gardeners and plants, including optimal soil conditions with warm temperatures and increased moisture, reduced stress on plants due to cooler air and less pest activity, and a jump-start on growth as roots develop while top growth is dormant. This allows new plants to become well-established before winter, leading to a more vibrant display in the spring. We visited North Shore Natives this past weekend, and a range of perennial native plants is available. 🗺️Get on the map We’re tracking native gardens and highlighting the network of pathways for safer pollinator travel. Energy Companion for Single Family and Multifamily owners (part-time position): Green Beverly is looking for an energy efficiency/building system-minded person to assist with our newest grant! GB will be reaching out to certain demographics of Beverly residents to help them through the process of weatherizing their property and potentially planning for and/or installing heat pumps. The ideal candidate would be able to potentially be present during a Mass Save assessment at a resident's home, offer advice to the owner during or after the assessment, walk alongside them through the process, assisting as the resident needed - essentially being an "Energy Companion" to help a resident through the process. Building systems knowledge that will be helpful: Construction knowledge about weatherization/insulating; heat pump/ductless mini split knowledge; and/or Mass Save experience. We expect this to be a part-time position with hours and schedule depending on the number of residents looking for this service, but additional hours could be available if the candidate is interested in helping with the overall project management of the program, such as outreach/calling landlords. Volunteer Program Spotlight: A Note of Appreciation A message from Scott Gorman, Food Diversion Coordinator 📮 The Food Diversion Program at Green Beverly deeply appreciates the ongoing partnership with Whole Foods Market and Shaw's in Beverly. Through their generous donations of surplus food and commitment to diverting it from the waste stream, these businesses are making a meaningful difference in the lives of food-insecure members of our community. Our program rescues food that previously ended up in a dumpster or landfill. Our community partners include Ellis Square Friends, two Beverly YMCA Affordable Housing facilities, Will House, a home for men in recovery, the Salem Pantry, and Beverly Bootstraps My gratitude extends especially to our incredible volunteers. Their kindness, generosity, and thoughtful commitment to rescuing food are truly inspiring. 📰Heat Pumps in the News! All Electric Utility Customers Will Soon Be Eligible for Heat Pump Discount Rates. A clarifying article hot off the press from WBUR is here. More to come on this, but some key takeaways are the following: Enroll in the seasonal rate before the winter heating season starts on November 1, 2025, and residential customers in the electric utilities’ low-income discount program who use a heat pump are also able to enroll in the new seasonal rate. WBUR reported, “If you got your heat pump through the Mass Save program in the last couple of years, you almost certainly qualify — in the future, you may even be automatically enrolled. If you didn't get your heat pump through Mass Save, or you got it before 2019, signing up will take a little more work. The utilities are still fine-tuning this process, but expect them to ask you for paperwork to verify you have a heat pump, like proof of installation.” It looks like National Grid is still working out how the sign-up will work….
