After five wonderful years with Green Beverly, we are saying goodbye to Julia Long, our Community Engagement Director. While we are saddened that Green Beverly is losing such a dedicated and visionary leader, we are excited for our community. Julia's new role as Beverly’s first Chief of Staff and Sustainability will strengthen our overall sustainability efforts throughout Beverly. Julia shared these reflections on her time with Green Beverly: "For the past five years, Green Beverly has been a dream come true for me. What began as a set of innovative ideas has become a set of vibrant and much beloved projects and programs for our community, and we all know there is much work yet to do. I am grateful to have grown as a professional and as a person because of—and alongside—each of you." Julia, we've grown alongside you too. You've taught us, inspired us, and shown us what dedicated leadership looks like. The seeds you've planted, in our community gardens, in our programs, and in our hearts, will keep growing for years to come. Please join us in wrapping Julia in gratitude for everything she's given and in celebrating this beautiful next chapter. We can't wait to see all the good you'll do, Julia. Join Green Beverly's Compost Pilot Program! ♻️ Green Beverly is launching a compost pilot program to help residents reduce food waste. New drop-off locations include Hannah Elementary and Glen Urquhart School, plus two existing City of Beverly sites (shared upon registration). ⭐Did you know there is something called a “cold climate heat pump?” If you are getting heat pumps make sure you are asking your contractor about “cold climate heat pumps.” A cold climate heat pump is a model that retains the vast majority of its heating output at 5°F, which is important because we live in a cold climate! See this post from Laminar Collective all about cold climate heat pumps. Heat Pump rate with National Grid: Qualified residential customers who use heat pumps for home heating became eligible for a new reduced electric delivery rate. This seasonal rate applies to electricity usage from November 1 through April 30, helping reduce energy costs during colder months. Please go to National Grid’s page to learn all about it! Mass Save: And of course if you are spending money to heat - you want to keep in as much heat as you can! Small Budget, Big Impact Keep temperatures low: Use a programmable thermostat, wear layers, lower your water heater, and wash clothes in cold water. Zone your home: Heat only the rooms you use most and close vents in rarely used spaces (see Efficient Heating for details). Contain the heat: Seal drafty doors and windows, use thermal drapes at night, let sunlight in during the day, and close fireplace dampers. Make repairs: Seal foundation cracks, replace broken window panes, clean air ducts, service your heating system annually, and insulate pipes and your home properly.
