🐝 Green Beverly's Garden Rebate Program Is Open for Summer

July is here, and so is our Garden Rebate Program! If you've been dreaming of a bigger, more beautiful native garden, now is the time to make it happen. Green Beverly is offering up to $500 in rebates for new pollinator gardens that meet our size and native plant criteria. Check eligibility and apply while funds are still available!

Hands-on Compost:
If you want to get a more hands-on experience of what we can do with our waste, come join us for a Beverly Resident tour of Black Earth Compost Facility in Manchester on July 23rd at 4:30 pm. This event is free, but registration is required. Children are welcome! 

Let's Recycle our old Trash Barrels:
The City and the Waste Reduction Committee are hosting a barrel exchange/return program Aug 14-16, and Green Beverly is partnering to help make the event a success to repurpose and effectively recycle as many old barrels as possible. We will have volunteer opportunities in 2-hour time slots on each of the days. Please contact volunteer@greenbeverly.org to request a link to sign up for a shift.

Boston Waste Battery Event:
Join Boston on July 22nd for their free battery take-back event with the Boston Fire Department, Casella Waste Systems, Inc., ReSource Waste Services, and the U.S. Forest Service’s Woodsy Owl! Bring the whole family to learn about battery safety, proper disposal, and the simple steps you can take to keep your community safe from battery fires. Learn more here.

Get Involved with Green Beverly!
Whether you're a seasoned eco-warrior or just getting started, there's a place for you. Here's what's happening now:

🍃 Volunteer Opportunities:
-City-wide Trash Bin Collection & Swap — Held in the BHS parking lot Friday, August 14 (12-4pm), Saturday, August 15 (9am-5pm), and Sunday, August 16 (12-5pm). Green Beverly is supporting a city-wide effort to recycle or trade old trash and recycling bins, and we need volunteers to help keep operations smooth and safe. Two-hour shifts available across all three days. Email volunteer@greenbeverly.org to request a sign-up link.

-Homecoming 5k — We are helping to keep the Homecoming 5k low waste by supporting the water stations and making sure their compostable cups end up in the compost bins! Can you help us support the water stations? Thursday, August 6th, 6 pm at Lynch Park (Looking for 4 volunteers). Email volunteer@greenbeverly.org if interested.

-Food Diversion — Every Sunday at 11:45 am and Thursday at 9:45 am, help us move unsold food from Whole Foods to neighbors in need. Must be able to carry 35 lbs and have a larger vehicle. Email volunteer@greenbeverly.orgwith "MOVE FOOD" in the subject line.

-Driveway Parties — Live in Centerville, Raymond Farms (behind Henry's), or Gloucester Crossing? Host a driveway chat with Green Beverly this summer! We'll talk about home energy, bills, heat pumps, and more. Email info@greenbeverly.org with "Driveway Party" in the subject line.

🌱Did you know INSULATING keeps your home COOLER?  🧊

Plug the holes, seal the gaps, keep the heat out of your house! Incentives and rebates available from Mass Save to do the work of insulating! 

• How to use your FAN(s) to keep COOL:

This guide covers 10 proven fan-based cooling strategies.  Keep in mind if you use fans you may be able to raise the temperature on your air conditioning thereby saving energy and money.  To maximize the cooling effect of an air conditioning system, run fans to create a wind-chill effect to distribute and circulate cold air throughout a room. 

• AC on all day or turn it off while you are out? 

If you keep the temperature of your AC in the upper 70’s during the day it may make sense to leave it on all day rather than coming home to a hot house and then cooling it off.  Read this article to learn more:  It's Actually Okay to Run the AC All Day (Even If You're Not Home) (New York Times - Wirecutter)

🌱Did you know that HEAT pumps COOL?

• Heat pumps to COOL and HEAT:  Take a look at this Green Beverly page for a general understanding of heat pumps. Mass Save has rebates for up to $8500 to install heat pumps. In order to take advantage of Mass Save rebates, you need to start with a no-cost assessment.  

• Confused?   If you have quotes for heat pumps, you can get help from Mass Save -  Schedule a no-cost virtual consultation with a Mass Save Specialist for guidance.  Decarbonization Consultations

• Bonus:  You might think heat pumps are a recent invention, but they go way back into the 1800s!  More on that here….

🌱Reduce your trash  - keep food out of the trash - compost it instead! 
Green Beverly has launched a FREE compost pilot program with two new drop-off sites at Hannah Elementary School and Glen Urquhart School. Beverly residents who register will also receive access to two additional compost locations run by the City of Beverly.
Participation is simple: review the composting guidelines, complete the Green Beverly sign-up form, and receive your combination lock code within a week. Then drop off up to two bags of kitchen scraps per week at either school location.
