Actions To Take

to lower your driving emissions

  • Shut It Off

    It's bad for our health the environment, and our wallets so let's remember to turn off our cars instead.

    Here are a few reasons why...

    * CAR IDLING

    contributes substantially to air pollution

    Generating 58 million tons of CO2 emissions

    = equivalent driving 12 million gas-powered passenger vehicles for one year

    (According to the EPA)

    * CAR IDLING wastes

    6 billion gallons fuel/yr ≌ $19 billion

    Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting the engine.

    Parents idle between 10 to 30 minutes in school pick-up lines.

    (According to the Department of Energy & EPA)

    Resources:

    * There’s No Idling on the Benefits of Turning Off Your Engine

    * Why Idling is Bad for Your Car, Health, Wallet, and the Environment

    * Benefits of Avoiding Excessive Idling (TikTok)

  • Reduce Your Miles & Minutes

    Here are some ideas to help reduce the miles driving a gas car. Less driving means less $$ at the pump.

    * Plan ahead. Try to schedule appointments and errands in one location around the same time period (ex. have a doctor's appointment in Peabody, while in the area go to Trader Joe's, Market Basket and/or a store in the Malls)

    * Maximize Your Trip: Need to run a one-off errand? Ask your neighbors if you can pick something up for them, it may reduce their need to drive to the same store.

    * Share fewer cars in your household: Avoid having a car for every driver. Setup a "car checkout calendar" to identify who needs it. (ex. In Google, create an email for "Car#1" and share it's calendar with all household members. When you add a trip to your calendar, invite "Car#1", this will notify everyone that it's checked out.)

    * Carpool: Join or organize a group to share rides for work, school drop-off/pickup, and after-school activities

    Another gas saving tip: slow down. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), every 5 miles driven above the 60 mph level is equivalent to paying 20 extra cents per gallon for gas.

  • Hit the Pavement

    Biking and walking are a great way to get your exercise and really "see" your neighborhood.

    More and more of us are running errands around town this way. Especially on a beautiful day.

    E-bikes and E-scooters with cargo attachments can help make errand running easier. Radical Adventures has a Beverly Farms location to rent E-bikes. Have questions about E-bikes, contact Green Beverly's Coaches.

    Hear how walking keeps Fatima connected with her neighbors in her story below.

    Haven't biked in a while? Get the kicks out and join a Third Wheel Bikes group ride, called the "Slow Roll" - Thursday evenings (April - August 2026).

    A great example of safe school commuting:

    The International Bike Bus program = A bike bus is a group of students and parents cycling together to school along a set route, functioning like a bus with designated stops to promote active, safe, and fun commuting. If you have school-aged kids, consider organizing one to form a Bike Bus to your local school. Micheal OConnor's Fall 2025 Bike Bus was shown in the Joyride program (see the recording below).

    * Want to get involved, follow the citizen advocacy group, Beverly Bicycle Committee (BBC) on Facebook and Instagram @BeverlyBike. They meet bi-monthly at the main Beverly Library and host riding events.

    * The City of Beverly's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) meets quarterly at City Hall (schedules posted on the City website)

  • Stay Grounded

    Avoid Flying and Large Vessel Cruising: Both are among the most carbon-intensive ways to travel.

    When possible, choose alternatives with a smaller footprint:

    * Use Virtual Conferencing Instead of Traveling for Meetings: Before booking a flight for work, consider whether the meeting could happen just as effectively online.

    * Take a Train Instead of Flying: Rail travel produces significantly less CO₂ per passenger than flying — and it's often city-center to city-center.

    * Plan Vacations Closer to Home: Exploring your own region can be just as rewarding while supporting local economies and keeping your carbon footprint low.

    Find these and other resources and tips in Green Beverly's "Green Actions" section of the website.

  • Make the Switch

    When you are ready to replace your car, make it a plug-in-hybrid or fully Electric Vehicle

    Not sure which model is best for your needs? Ask Green Beverly's EV Coach. They will give you unbiased advice (unlike the car deals who have good data on EVs).

    Want to know what it's really like to own an EV? Watch the videos from your neighbors, Julia, Dave and David below.

    Maybe you'd rather replace that car with an electric motorcycle or moped; an electric scooter; or an electric bike? There are lots of options for getting around.

    Let's all go electric!

  • Ride Together

    There are ways to get around without a car

    Your neighbor, James, shares why he loves commuting by train into Boston (see his story below)

    The MBTA -

    Beverly is fortunate to have one of the highest number of commuter train stops in the Commonwealth, Five: Downtown, North Beverly, Montserrat, Prides Crossing & Beverly Farms. More information on the MBTA North Station / Newburyport / Rockport Line

    * MBTA Bus #451 (Salem / Beverly)

    * If you can't use public transportation because of a temporary or permanent disability, The Ride is a door-to-door shuttle option.

    Rideshare Services like Uber and Lyft offer carpool options that save money and reduce overall fuel usage. You can request an Electric Vehicle (EV) driver too!

    Other Shuttle Options:

    * Salem Skipper

    * Cape Ann Transit Authority (CATA)

    * Logan Express (Liberty Tree Mall to Airport)

  • Experience the Joyride

    Your Joyride Starts Here

    Don't take our word for it. Test one yourself.

    Go drive an Electric Vehicle (EV) for 20 minutes - you'll see how fun they are to drive.

    Have friends or neighbors with an EV? Ask if you can take a test drive. Don't know anyone, email us and we'll connect you to an EV owner that's happy to help (email info@greenbeverly.org).

    See the EV experiences some of your neighbors have had in the videos below. They describe how pleasantly surprised they were when they switched from gas to electric cars.

    If you try one, we'd love to know! Share your reaction @GreenBeverly #Joyride.

  • We're Here to Help
