WASTE REDUCTION
Green Actions

Food waste, which we can turn into compost, accounts for 40% of total residential waste.

COMPOSTING OPTIONS * RECYCLING IN BEVERLY * UNWANTED OTHER STUFF

KEEPING OTHER HOUSEHOLD ITEMS OUT OF THE WASTE STREAM

Rather than putting items that you no longer want into the trash, give them a second look and determine:

  • are they good enough to find new homes; or

  • can they be useful to you with a little DIY and creativity?

DONATE, SWAP, OR SELL

  • give items and clothes you no longer need but which are in good condition to a nonprofit thrift store like Beverly Bootstraps or Good Will  Another location taking items is  Savers in Danvers which is a for-profit organization which accepts donations of secondhand clothing and household goods on behalf of other organizations.

  • Bridgeworks Boutique is a shop run by Lifebridge.  This shop is filled with renewed and vintage furniture finds. Contact them to donate your used furniture.

  • for very gently used clothing consider consignment; local options include Worthy Girl and The Golden Hanger

  • donate, swap, or sell on local exchanges like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Poshmark, Thredup, Swap

REPAIR OR REPURPOSE

  • shoes can often be repaired to give them new life; repairing heels or replacing soles is a fraction the cost of a new pair

  • mend worn or ripped clothing

  • learn to mend your clothing at a fix it clinic. See our event page and sign up for our newsletter. If the City is hosting a clinic it should be listed on this page as well.

  • upcycle functional but dated furniture, cabinets, or countertops with inexpensive craft solutions instead of replacing with new material
