Crane Lecture: Native American Art & Exhibitions at The Trustees
November is Native American Heritage Month. Join us for a lecture with Tess Lukey, The Trustees Associate Curator of Native American Arts. Learn about The Trustees efforts to center Indigenous voices and culture via our exhibits and programming, to recognize the important contributions of Indigenous peoples to the lands now stewarded by The Trustees. Tess will discuss her work curating the Across Boundaries Across Barriers gallery at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, focused on the medicine wheel & seven directions, featuring historic and contemporary works of art from several Native American communities in five sections that center the concepts associated with each direction. Tess will also discuss recent collaborations with local Indigenous educators & The Trustees statewide education team to develop curricula connecting students to this gallery and the medicine wheel. Finally, Tess will touch on other projects and collaborative work, such as the next installation in the Art & the Landscape series: The Land Tells Our Stories, which will feature outdoor art coming to The Crane Estate in Spring 2026.
About our speaker:
Tess Lukey joined The Trustees in 2022 as our first-ever Curator of Native American Art to develop exhibitions and research initiatives related to The Trustees’ Indigenous art collections.
Lukey, an Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal member and lifelong New Englander, works across the state, and is based both at Fruitlands Museum and the deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum. She works closely with community members, collectors, and donors for potential acquisitions while offering broader access to and knowledge of The Trustees’ collections of art made by Indigenous peoples.
Lukey brings to The Trustees an extensive curatorial and educational experience. She has worked for the Museum of Fine Arts and the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, and the John Sommers Gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has also completed fellowships at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and the Hibben Center for Archaeology Study and the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque.
Lukey has a bachelor’s degree in ceramics and art history from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a master’s degree in Native American art history with a minor in museum studies from the University of New Mexico. In her spare time, Lukey is a traditional potter and basket weaver practicing the techniques of her own Indigenous community. She currently lives in Sutton, Mass., the ancestral home of the Nipmuc Nation, with her partners and children.

This month we will be partnering with Salem Sound Coastwatch to host a drop-in style event at David S. Lynch Memorial Park, 55 Ober St in Beverly. As winter water birds continue to come down from their summering grounds in the north, many species stop in Salem Sound to feed and hang out in its relative calm. Stop by anytime during this event to learn about water bird identification and how to join in with Salem Sound Coastwatch's upcoming community science Winter Water Bird Survey.
The Great Pumpkin Smash
Let's return those Halloween pumpkins back to where they belong: the soil! After Halloween, bring your pumpkin to one of various drop spots at New Entry Farm (ongoing), or the public schools (designated times) so we can smash them into the great big compost pile. Experience our lively music, trebuchet flinging (the pull-the-string line returns!), face painting, food + drink... and a few new surprises.
All details here.
Kiss The Ground
As part of Green Beverly's Autumn Earth Days Film Festival, and in partnership with Beverly Waste Reduction Committee, Three Sisters Garden Project, and the Cabot Theater, we present Kiss The Ground: an inspiring and groundbreaking film that reveals the first viable solution to our climate crisis... regenerating the world’s soils.
Soil regeneration can completely and rapidly stabilize Earth’s climate, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies. Using compelling graphics and visuals, along with striking NASA and NOAA footage, the film artfully illustrates how, by drawing down atmospheric carbon, soil is the missing piece of the climate puzzle. This film is appropriate for middle school aged and older. Stay tuned for registration.

Choate Island Day 2025
Spend a day with us in celebration of Choate Island – the crown jewel of the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Here deer and foxes roam through fields that once housed herds of sheep, and osprey fly over breathtaking views of Essex Bay. The island was first home to indigenous farmers and fishers, then to generations of the Choate family, and was later a retreat for Cornelius and Miné Crane, who loved the place so much they decided to be buried at the summit.
This year, we are again offering both a Self-Guided and Guided experience. Both will allow visitors to explore the extent of the island. The Guided experience will be led by a trained guide for the first 90 minutes of the program on a more thoroughly interpreted walk across the island, after which visitors will be free to take their time getting back to the boat dock. The Guided experience starts at the island-side boat dock and ends at the Choate Island summit. However, we will have staff and volunteers scattered across the island to provide interpretation for self-guided visitors as well. See ticketing options below for Guided and Self-Guided tours.
Park at Crane Beach, which is at the end of Argilla Road. Parking will be free for this event, and board our shuttle bus to take you straight down to the boat dock (less than 5-minute drive). There you can check in (if you purchased tickets online) or buy tickets “at the door” (if available) before boarding the ferry to the island, which is less than a 10-minute boat trip one way. The shuttles will run continuously between 10AM and 3PM. The last boat returns from the island at 3PM.
Below is a sampling of events for the day (subject to change):
Talks on Choate Island life, human and natural history
Proctor Barn open house
Choate House self-guided tours
Hikes to the Crane Burial Site
Self-guided walking tour
Kids scavenger hunt
Shoreline walk and beachcombing
Light refreshments will be served. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch but remember to carry out all that you carry in, and please, no alcohol.
Ticket Options:
Choate Island Day – Guided Experience (Morning) 10AM-12:30PM
Nonmember Adult $50/Member Adult $40, Nonmember Child $35/Member Child $28

Explore! North Shore – Long Hill Hike
The Explore! North Shore hiking series will get you outside and moving at some lesser explored Trustees properties across the Northeast Region, at the right time of year to see these special places shine. These beginner hikes will not be too strenuous, and will offer frequent stops for learning and taking in the beauty of our special places.
Join us at Long Hill in Beverly for some nature, nurture, and learning! Immerse yourself in the wonders of nature while learning about the history and unique qualities of this beautiful property. Travel the woodland trails and stroll through the outdoor “garden rooms” that were cultivated and stewarded by the Sedgwick family until they generously donated the property to The Trustees in 1979.
This easy/moderate hike will last ~2 hours and cover ~2 miles, over gravel & grass trails with minimal elevation change.
Be sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing, and boots or shoes that are appropriate for hiking in potentially wet and muddy spots, or over uneven terrain. We recommend you bring your own water bottle, snacks, and anything else you need to be comfortable outdoors.
Accessibility: This hike has an easy level of difficulty, and requires hiking ~2 miles on unpaved and potentially muddy trails, with moderate elevation gain for approximately 2 hours.
All children must be accompanied by an adult. This is appropriate for adventurous kids as young as 6 years old, but is geared towards learners of all ages including adults. Adult discretion on your child’s ability to manage this activity is advised.
Refunds/Exchanges: Refunds and/or Exchanges must be requested at least 7 days in advance. In the case of event cancellation, you will be notified via the email address used to register and fully refunded within 14 days.
