Green Actions

Food rotting in a landfill produces methane gas which is 28-36 times more potent than CO2.

REDUCE WASTE ACTIONS

Reducing usage is the first step to being more sustainable in any area, and it’s especially critical for food. Throwing food away increases the weight of municipal garbage (driving up costs for Beverly, and ultimately for Beverly taxpayers), produces methane gas when it decomposes trapped in a landfill, and represents an enormous waste of the resources spent to grow and transport the food initially. Reducing food waste directly impacts greenhouse emissions and is an important tool in the local fight against climate change.

  • use what you buy - devise a system to keep oldest food in your fridge from being forgotten

  • save food trimmings in the freezer for soup broth

  • implement tips to make food last longer (here’s another food storage guide)

  • explore recipes that use typically wasted parts of food

  • compost your food waste

  • if you can’t compost, put food scraps through your garbage disposal

  • use the Too Good To Go service app to receive excess meals from local restaurants

  • if you’re a coffee drinker, there are multiple uses for those grounds before they go into your compost bin
