From a Letter in the Mail to Action: 27 Beverly Residents Are Already Saying Yes to the Energy Challenge
by Dean Berg, Shelley Lee, Fatima Lopez, and Tracy Danner
Earlier this month, many* Beverly residents received an exciting invitation in their mailbox.
“Sign up for a No-Cost Mass Save Home Energy Assessment!”
The letter, which came from Julia Long, Chief of Staff and Sustainability for the City of Beverly, is part of an effort to challenge residents of Beverly and Salem to heat and cool their homes more efficiently—leading to lower utility bills—while reducing our community's carbon footprint.
Since 2022 the City of Beverly has partnered with Green Beverly and Homeworks through the Mass Save Community First Partnership, which is a program sponsored locally by National Grid.

The City has partnered with a longstanding Mass Save partner and Home Performance Contractor, HomeWorks Energy, to make it easy for Beverly residents to complete no-cost assessments and recommended energy-efficiency upgrades.
Since the start of this initiative more than 3,933 no-cost home energy assessments have been completed. This led to 1,153 insulation jobs and 669 households that upgraded their heating and cooling systems.
And now, 27 more Beverly residents have stepped up to participate when they accepted the invitation in the most recent letter to get a no-cost home energy assessment—which identifies where their home is losing energy—and money.
What residents are eligible for:
75-100% off approved insulation upgrades and no-cost air sealing (saving an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs)
Up to $8,500 in heat pump rebates—cold-climate heat pumps are 2-3 times more efficient than a boiler or furnace, even at -15°F
0% financing for approved energy-efficiency home upgrades, including heat pumps
No-cost energy-saving products installed on the spot, like programmable thermostats and water-saving devices
Renters and income-qualified homeowners may qualify for even more support.
So say “Yes” to the invitation to join the party!

Tracy’s story…..
Tracy Danner, Green Beverly’s Energy Advocate for the Community First Partnership, has been a recipient of Mass Save’s rebates and incentives for her own home. “I was heating with oil and topping off my oil tank every 90 days at an average of $600 per visit. My downstairs was cold in the winter, and my upstairs was hot in the summer. I had a home energy assessment with Mass Save where they added insulation and guided me through the heat pump installation. They explained the rebate process, helped me with a 0% interest loan, and taught me how to operate the heat pumps, making the process easy.”
Now she is out in the community talking with others. “Homeworks Energy will connect you with the correct people to get your project completed to your needs. Heat pumps don’t just heat your home when it is cold out; they also cool your home when it is hot. I’m glad I switched”
For our Beverly landlords…
If you are a landlord, you can make your tenant more comfortable and keep them in the apartment longer. Miranda and her family were ready to move out of an apartment in Beverly Farms because it was too drafty and cold—but after the landlord insulated it with Mass Save, they decided to stay longer. Tenants not moving out keeps money in the landlord's pockets!
Why this moment matters?
“It may be hot out now—but it will be getting cold soon, so your future self will appreciate getting more insulation! Do it now!”, says Shelley Lee, the Green Beverly Program Director.
Weatherizing your home isn't just about lowering bills; it's about making your space more comfortable in every season, keeping heat inside when you need it and outside when you don't.
