Green Beverly on Energy: Heating, Cooling, and Electricity
by Shelley Lee, Green Beverly, Programming and Project Director
There are things you as a renter, homeowner, and landlord can do to save on energy - the biggest being the insulating and air sealing of your building using rebates and incentives from the Mass Save program. Green Beverly is looking to help Beverly residents do just that through a number of initiatives.
But to sweeten the deal, Green Beverly also wants to try to help residents generally lower their utility bills - through making sure you have all the discounts you are eligible for, making sure you have a good rate on your electric bill, and highlighting simple actions that can help you save.
Just go to our new Utility Bill Review section to start working through this list!
A sampling of things you will find in this new Utility Bill Review section:
Electricity discounts - including discounts for heating with heat pumps
Explanation about Beverly Community Electric - are you enrolled?
Tips for how to save on your heating bill this winter in our simple action list
All of this is available on our website for everyone but,
Green Beverly is also out in the community talking one on one…
Who were we talking to during the summer of 2025?
This summer we had a grant that gave us the opportunity to talk with renters in large apartment complexes.
Over the summer we were out in the community talking through the Utility Bill Review Program with people that live at Apple Village, YMCA housing, the Beverly Authority Housing, and Folly Hill; we spent time at Beverly Bootstraps talking with folks there and even did an Energy Jeopardy game at Harborlight’s Turtle Woods complex and Apple Village (Who knew Energy Jeopardy could be so much fun!?)
How did Green Beverly’s Utility Bill check-up help these communities?
There were quite a number of folks that did not know that there were discount rates for electricity that they were eligible for - we helped them save money there.
There were people that were paying too high a price for their electricity from a third party supplier and we explained how to switch to Beverly Community Electric and save money.
Since it was summer, we had discussions about simple actions like how to cut down on their air conditioning usage by using a fan to help cool you down; how in summer or winter a change of even 2 degrees can help you save money (condition to 2 degrees higher in summer, and heat to 2 degrees lower in winter), and a reminder to look around your home to see what can be turned off when you are not using it. Is it a big savings? Maybe not, but just like your credit card - electricity usage adds up!
Where will Green Beverly be talking about energy in the next 3 years?
In 2025, we were busy lining up funding to enable us to reach out to the following Beverly resident groups about energy for the next three years:
All residents/landlords/businesses in the Gloucester Crossing neighborhood
Senior citizens who live in neighborhoods without natural gas, like Centerville and Raymond Farms (or streets without natural gas)
All Beverly renters
All Beverly 1-4 multifamily landlords, and
Beverly small businesses
If you are in any of these groups, please reach out by filling out this google form.
Want to talk in person about your Utility Bill?

Anybody can stop by and talk with us!
Lastly, are you “energized” by helping others lower their Utility Bill or access the Mass Save program? Become an Energy Ambassador!
We are rolling out 2026 Green Beverly Energy Ambassador positions for residents who are senior citizens or live in the Gloucester Crossing neighborhood.

We are super excited about helping residents try to save on their Utility Bills, get a no-cost assessment with Mass Save, and weatherize and air seal their homes!
Talk with you soon about Energy in 2026!
